Leukerbad Switzerland

Spring water in the Valais

Leukerbad (or Loèche-les-Bains as it is known in French) is a town with a lot of history that is well known in Switzerland but less so outside of the country. It is famous both as a ski resort and as a thermal bath and was once considered one of the top spa destinations in the Alps. It is located in the Valais, 2.5 hours from Geneva airport. As with all Valaisan villages you reach it by climbing from the valley floor along curvy roads that finally bring you to 1400 metres of altitude with magnificent views over the Alps to the south. You would come here to experience the beauty of the nature, the wonders of its waters, and the authenticity of a mountain town in the Valais.

Four millions litres of water a day emerge from the ground at temperatures of up to 51 degrees Centigrade and numerous taps offer you the possibility to drink from the source at cooler temperatures. Ski lifts take you to 2300 meters of altitude where you discover a ski domain of more than 50 kilometers for alpine skiing, 17 kilometers for cross country skiing, and numerous possibilities for walking and other snowy pleasures.

For skiers, you reach 2300 meters of altitude within a few minutes and discover the several 4000 metre Valaisan mountains tops from the the Cols de Gemmi or Torrent. The skiing here has something suitable for all levels.

Leukerbad is not, in any way, a jet-set destination and the crowds that come to enjoy the spa waters can sometimes be a nuisance. This said it is a place for those that like to be anonymous and do not want the see and be seen type of resort. It is ideal for children and out-door enthusiasts.
